Tips for Bringing Curly Back

A lot of ladies come to me with varying patterns of curl on their one head. Oftentimes it is the front that can be a lot straighter than the rest of the curls or waves. Sometimes, it's the nape, or underlayer, of hair that is straighter. This can happen for a variety of reasons, and not all of them are curable.

1. It grows out of your head that way. People do have varying curl patterns all over, and some can even have more extreme varieties. This falls under the uncurable-but-adjustable category. Sometimes clipping the hair can help get that wave started, or it can be set on a perm rod while drying. Let me know if this is something you want to try!

2. It has been repeatedly pulled back taut and all the bounce has been destroyed.  This can sometimes be salvaged with a little TLC and patience! By imparting hydration back into the hair, you can baby it back to bouncy. Sometimes the hair is so damaged it only needs time to grow out and be cut off.

3. It has been overly highlighted and not much structure is left in the hair. This type of hair may benefit from a protein treatment. That is not to say run out and buy a bottle of Pantene! A one-time in-salon protein treatment may be all you need and you won't run the risk of over-proteinizing your hair, which can lead to dry, brittle breakage. Again, sometimes damage is irreparable and must be cut. Your Curly Hair Specialist can help you determine that.

The benefit of a dry curly cut is that I can cut each curl individually, and I can even use varying techniques for each curl or loose wave in order to get the best out of it. Sometimes, however, not much can be done on my end. Your hair just has a mind of its own! So while I have techniques and tricks up my sleeve, it is still possible that your hair is what it is, and isn't it beautiful when you can embrace it for its individuality?
