In the salon we typically will dry clients under a hooded dryer, which saves time and is efficient during the course of our day. Occasionally, we will also diffuse clients' hair before putting them under the dryer. Different results are achieved through different drying methods (these are covered at your New Client appointment), and many clients will also air dry at home.

Long, flowing luscious locks. You dream of hair past the middle of your back. Who doesn't want Mermaid Hair? Everyone does! Even I do. 

But I can't.

It's not because of my face shape or body type; those are not the reason I can't have the hair that I have always dreamed of. 

Unique to curly girls, is that they seemingly lose three times the amount of hair as their straight-haired counterparts. Some clients after beginning to practice the OlyCurl method, cleansing their hair less than before (typically they were washing daily), will contact me in frustration because they seem to be losing more hair. The explanation is simple.

If we lose about 100 hairs per day (curly girls only shed in the shower during detangling), and wash every third day, it stands to reason that in the shower we would lose around 300 hairs. It seems like a lot, but we must remember that it is three days’ worth of shedding at one time. Imagine if you went five or seven days. Be prepared for that amount of shed, and remember… it is normal!

Back to why you can’t have Mermaid Hair.

Everyone’s hair cycle is different. Some may only be two years; others seven. At the growth rate of half an inch per month, someone whose hair sheds on a two-year cycle would max out at a length of twelve inches. Now make that a curly girl with two to four inches of spring factor and you are looking at only six to ten inches of hair at their longest, if they don’t have layers.

Now if someone was on the higher end of that spectrum and their hair grew at the average speed, they might have hair that is 42 inches long! Now I measured from the top of my head to the bottom of my butt and that measured 37.5”! That would be some dreamy mermaid hair. Incidentally, I do know someone at my church that has hair that long!

Think of how many people you know with hair that long. Not very many, right? That’s why they are on the higher and extreme end of “average”.

The life cycle of my own hair is about two years. This gives me about 13 inches of length. How do I know this? I know this because my hair does not seem to want to grow past my shoulders. Once it hits my shoulders, it starts to get stringy and thin on the ends and I can see through the curtain of my hair.

So why is this important to know?

Back to Mermaid Hair and those who want it but can never attain it. I see people all the time trying to grow out their hair, but they have very wispy ends and no matter how often they get “healthy trims” it never seems to get any longer or thicker. This is because their hair has a shorter lifespan than is necessary for hair of mermaidian length. It just sheds out before it can grow that long.

Hello and Happy Spring!

There is a lot going on this year at OlyCurl and we want to keep you in the loop, especially if you haven't been in recently.

First, we will be switching software companies within the next week or so. Your reminders will look different, and will be via email, text, or phone. This detail is still being ironed out. You will not be able to respond to the texts, and possibly emails, except to confirm, so please call the salon to cancel or reschedule appointments. As before, we do require 48 hours in order to avoid a late-cancellation or no-show fee. Please be bear with us during this transition, as I'm sure there might be glitches as we learn to work with a new system. We will be spending the next several weeks transferring customer history and updating contact information as you come in for your appointment, so we appreciate an extra measure of patience and grace!

Secondly, we are working to acquire a new home for OlyCurl! It is not set in stone yet, but I am pretty sure it will be a done deal. If it goes through, we plan to receive the keys on April 22, and then we can start renovations. I hope to be able to open in the new location by July. So stay tuned for information on that! I will be updating our facebook page and website as things are happening so make sure you are following those!

Thirdly, we are in the process of hiring a third person! So once we find that special person who is a good fit you will be able to meet him or her soon!

Lastly, here are some dates you might need to know about:

I will be out of the salon the week of April 4th - 9 for Spring Break. Julia will be there operating with normal business hours with the exceptions of closing at 5 on Monday (instead of 7) and being closed on Saturday (so that she can enjoy two days off in a row!).

​Additionally, The salon will be closed or operating with limited hours from May 13 - 18 as Julia and I travel to Washington DC for continuing curly education with Curly Hair Artistry. We are very excited for this training and will be thrilled to bring home new techniques and skills that we have learned to use on our curly clients!

Come in the Saturday the 28th for our Once-A-Year Sale while supplies last! We will be open from 9:30 to 2pm. 

1. "Gimme that Shelf Haircut."
     Unfortunately, the shelf haircut is what a lot of people end up with at a traditional salon. With straight cutting methods and cutting curls wet, the result is major shelfage. When we cut curls, we cut them dry and one at a time. This enables us to see where each curl lives and cut it where it needs to be cut. Hence, avoiding the shelf.

2. "I really want that triangle look. You know, really heavy on the bottom and it makes me look like a pin head."
    Nobody wants to look like Roseanne RoseannaDanna. Seriously. But this happens all the time in traditional salons! Tell me      you haven't had that haircut. At OlyCurl, we know how to create shapes that are not the triangle. Shapes that are more            flattering for your face. Shapes that flatter your neck and create separation from your shoulders.

3. "If you can just make sure that my curls are super uneven and stringy, that'd be great."
    Every curl bounces up differently. What separates one curl from another is the unique shape of those strands that make          up a curl family. When we cut curls one at a time we can make sure nothing ends up looking stringy or uneven.

4. "Make it real smooth so that when I get outside in the rain it poofs right out."
    Luckily we don't have hot tools like flat irons and wands. Your curls are natural. Fighting it is a never-ending battle.

5. "I want my hair to look like this mushroom that I brought in as an example."
     No more mushroom head! Unless someone wants the Octopus Cut. Which, honestly, I can't believe is a real thing right           now. My mom had one in the late 80s.

6. "Please make my hair do that granny-helmet head thing."
     Granny helmets are out. Soft touchable curls are where it's at. No need to shellac the curls anymore. They should actively       bounce. Even if they are on the shorter side. 

7. "I just love it when my hair is super crunchy and doesn't move."
    The 80s called and they want their Aquanet/White Rain/Dippity Doo back.

Look, we know curls. It's what we do all day long. We know what you don't want. Let's discuss. Bring pictures to your appointment. It is just as important to share with your stylist what you don't want as it is to share what you do want! We can make your curl dreams come true!

I am beyond thrilled to announce that our curly community was able to raise more than our goal of $6,000 for Keep A Child Alive in a Fundraising Cut-A-Thon on September 12-13th. I was able to welcome Lorraine Massey and seven (count them, SEVEN!) Curly Hair Specialists from all over the US, to Olympia to help cut and shape curly hair for a cause! We had a blast together at the auction brunch, book signing, and meet and greet on Saturday. Then we rocked Olympia, changing lives and self esteems, on Sunday. All told, 41 haircuts were done (and one bang trim) and 100% of the proceeds went to KCA. I am so proud of my team and also the clients that showed up and donated! Enjoy the slideshow!
